The Barisan Nasional (BN) does not have a pact with any probable Independent candidate in the Kajang state by-election on March 23.
Instead, BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Umno and other BN component parties would only campaign for MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun who was announced as the BN candidate.
Citing the BN as an underdog in the by-election, he said the coalition would also work with "friends of BN" to wrest the seat from the opposition.
Tengku Adnan, who is also federal territories minister, was speaking to reporters after officiating the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency's 1Wilayah Feast here, Saturday.
The seat fell vacant following the resignation of incumbent assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh of Parti Keadilan Rakyat on Jan 27 to make way for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest.
