Boat pilots and crew have been urged to monitor the weather conditions before deciding to take tourists to the islands.

Semporna Tourism Boat Association chairman Kerino Jalani said this was important so that they are always prepared for any eventualities at sea.

"In addition to getting information from the Meteorological Department and Sabah Parks, they can warn boat operators going to islands such as Bohey Dulang," he said when contacted here, today.

Kerino said the boat pilots and crew should comply with safety instructions when told of strong winds and rough seas.

"If the conditions make it unsafe for travel, then the trip should be cancelled for the safety of all," he added.

On Saturday, a catamaran with three crew, 31 passengers including 28 Chinese tourists, sunk while on the way to Pulau Mengalum, northwest of Kota Kinabalu.

Of the total, 25 were pulled from the sea, including three bodies. - BERNAMA
