The body of a female newborn baby with her umbilical cord intact was found in a black box beside a rubbish bin at Bayu Senja Food Court in Batu Ferringghi here today.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the dead infant wrapped in a piece of white cloth and batik was found at 9am by a member of the public.
"Initial investigations found no wounds or injuries or note on the body," he said here today.
He said based on the condition of the newborn, police believed the infant could have died less than 24 hours ago. The remains of baby was sent to Penang Hospital for post-mortem.
Police are requesting people with information on the incident to contact the nearest police station.
