The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, wants all newly-built buildings to be equipped with a surau.
He said the prayer room should be strategically located and be comfortable.
He chided at some building owners for their lackadaisical attitude when providing the prayer room facility at their premises.
"The prayer rooms are provided merely to meet the criteria for approval to use the building, but the prayer room is in the rear corner of the building or in the basement," he said in his speech at the opening of the Al-Ilmi Mosque in Sungai Berembang near here Monday.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin , who is also Perlis Islamic Religion and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs), said a proper prayer room should have a place for ablution, adequate lighting, fan or air-conditioner, facilities for the disabled and a separate area for men and women.
At the unction, the Raja Muda also presented MAIPs' contributions to 105 mosque officials in Perlis, as well as tithe to the poor and destitute.
