Remnant members of a drug-trafficking syndicate which was crippled by the police in March last year in Kedah had attempted to make a major comeback in Selangor - only to find their ambitious plan 'stung' into submission by the federal police.

Last Wednesday, Bukit Aman's Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group, better known as STING, thwarted the efforts of the five suspected drug traffickers.

The police team seized 206 compressed slabs of ganja worth about RM1 million in three raids at Kajang and Klang in Selangor.

Two women were among five people picked up in the 15-hour STING operation which began at 6.40am.

Bukit Aman Narcotic CID director, Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the raids were conducted at three housing estates in Taman TTDI Grove, Kajang; Taman Sentosa, Klang and Kampung Sungai Udang, Klang.

He told a media conference here today that the suspects aged between 30 and 47 were remanded for six days until June 13 to facilitate investigations.

He said the police also seized RM9,000 - believed to be proceeds from the sale of drugs - and three vehicles.

"We believe the ganja was smuggled from a neighbouring country to be marketed nationwide.

"Our initial investigations revealed that they (the suspects) are remnants of members of a syndicate which we crippled in March last year in Sungai Petani. In that operation, we seized one tonne of ganja," added Mohd Mokhtar.

In the meantime, he said numerous types of drugs worth RM111.98 million were seized in the first six months of this year and 78,767 people, including 3,497 foreigners were detained to facilitate investigations.
