SHAH ALAM: The repair work to fortify the bund near the pond in Tasik Black Water, Bandar Mahkota Cheras following soil erosion last Sunday (May 5) has been carried out.
State Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Orang Asli Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) informed that the repairs involved the strengthening of the bund to prevent leachates from the pond from contaminating the stream near Sungai Perimbun, a tributary of Sungai Langat.
"This is a follow-up to soil erosion which resulted in the failure of the bund's structure in the pond area which subsequently caused leachates to overflow from the area (Tasik Black Water) which was previously an illegal dumping site.
"Close and static monitoring in Sungai Perimbun, as well as Sungai Langat, was implemented by LUAS and investigations found that zero threshold odour number (TON) readings were recorded, therefore, there were no disruptions to the operations of the Cheras Batu 11 Water Treatment Plant (LRA) reported," he said in a statement.
In the meantime, Hee said LUAS will open investigation papers under Section 79 (1) of the LUAS Enactment 1999 which stipulates a minimum fine of RM200,000 and a maximum fine of RM1 million, and imprisonment of not less than three years, if convicted of illegal dumping activities at the lake.
He said LUAS together with the Department of Environment (DOE) and the Hulu Langat Land and District Office (PTD) had conducted an integrated operation led by the Kajang Municipal Council on May 31, with the local authority sealing the lake area and a stop work notice would be given to landowners.
"The Hulu Langat PTD will also issue Notice 7A to landowners for immediate rehabilitation and restoration of the land," he added.
