The bushfires which caused haze in several areas here are expected to be completely brought under control by Monday.

Miri Fire and Rescue chief, Law Poh Kong said this was because the number of affected areas (near Industrial Training Institute (ILP), Kuala Baram had reduced.

"The extinguishing operation is conducted for 24 hours. The areas affected have been reduced but heavy smoke hampered our work," he told Bernama today.

The Department of Environment (DOE) portal shows the Air Pollutant Index (API) at ILP (6pm) at 308 (unhealthy) while Miri recorded 55 (healthy).

An API reading of 0 to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy and 300 and above, hazardous.

Members of the public can refer to the portal apims.doe.gov.my to obtain the current API reading.
