The Cabinet has confirmed that the statement by Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin and Deputy Minister of Finance I, Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri against Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student, Veveonah Mosibin is incorrect and inappropriate.
The matter was informed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar on his Twitter page today.
Khairy explained that the matter was brought to the Cabinet meeting this morning.
"The Cabinet this morning discussed the issue of #Veveonah. The Cabinet took note of the statements of the two deputy ministers which were incorrect and inappropriate.
"The Cabinet agrees that the real issue is internet access and other basic facilities specifically in the interior. The government will do its best to improve them," he said briefly on his Twitter.
Zahidi, while answering additional questions in the Dewan Negara sitting earlier, said that the student's action of climbing a tree was not to get internet access while sitting for the exam online.
Instead, he said it was just to create the content of the student's YouTube channel.
However, the statement caught the attention of netizens and some politicians who slammed the deputy minister before he issued an apology a few hours later.
Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim Bakri in his status on his Facebook page said that Veveonah had cheated and an investigation was underway to determine whether the student had actually sat for the examination on a tree or not.
