Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s cabinet line up - which saw prominent roles given to Indian leaders - was applauded by political analysts.

Associate Professor Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said the appointments would reflect better representation for the Indian community.

“Both ministers can play a positive role by maximising their respective roles in the ministry. They can uplift the Indian community now,” said Dr Sivamurugan.

Yesterday, it was announced that Datuk Seri G. Palanivel and Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam were appointed as the Natural Resources and Environment Minister and Health Minister, respectively.

Analyst Khoo Kay Peng said both ministers are reasonable good leaders.

“Each of the portfolio has its own set of importance and role. For instance, the Health Ministry has to ensure that health services reach Sabah and Sarawak.

“Moreover, the ministry has to ensure that the people in the urban area are not deprived of health services as well,” he said.

Analyst Datuk Dr Mohammad Agus Yusoff said the ministerial roles bestowed upon the Indian leaders can be seen as a way for Najib to show his gratitude to the Indian community.

“Najib is excited with the support given to him by the Indian community in the 13th general election compared to the 12th general election and he rewarded the key people who helped Barisan Nasional (BN)'s victory,” he said.

He added that the Indians now have to unite and stand strong.

Besides the appointment of Palanivel and Subramaniam, the appointment of four Indian deputy ministers include MIC vice- president Datuk M. Saravanan (Youth and Sports Ministry), MIC Putera coordinator P. Kamalanathan (Education and Higher Education Ministry), Penang People's Progressive Party chief Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan (Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry) and Hindraf chairman P. Waytha Moorthy (Prime Minister's Department).
