The Women and Family Development Council Convention (MPWK) 2017 has proposed for the Family Support Division, which is currently available only at Syariah Courts, to be extended to civil courts.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said the proposal was one of the resolutions of the convention held here Friday.
"The Family Support Division which is currently available only at Syariah Courts helps divorced (Muslim) women to get the alimony from their husbands.
"The time has come for the division to also be made available at civil courts," she told reporters at the end of the convention.
Azizah said at present, non-Muslim women who were divorced did not have a place to complaint and claim their rights, and that was why she would bring the proposal to the attention of the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim soon.
The convention was attended by MPWK representatives from 222 Parliamentary constituencies in the country. - Bernama
