The Kedah government has been urged to relocate the remaining residents at Kota Kuala Muda, which was hit by the tsunami 10 years ago.
Deputy chairman of Kampung Kepala Jalan Village Development and Security Committee, Abd Majid Kassim , said when tsunami struck exactly 10 years ago today, it destroyed many houses.
"Many houses were also damaged and it is the occupants of these houses who came back and continued to stay there after repairing the houses, but the houses are in risk-areas.
"Hence, the need to relocate them," he told Bernama here today.
Abdul Majid said the tsunami incident 10 years ago had changed Kota Kuala Muda, making the area into a tourist spot.
He said the area had potential to become a popular tourist destination and that an embankment with a walkway was being built to enable visitors to get a better view of the tsunami location.
He said the reading of the "Yasin" and tahlil was held at the Kampung Masjid Jamek Mosque here last night to commemorate the tsunami incident.
