Clashes occurred shortly after midnight at 12.05am, after a crowd made up of over 100 men gathered at an intersection of a hotel located near Low Yat Plaza early Monday.
Security forces including the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) arrived at the scene moments later to calm the mob and expanded fortifications around the area. By 12.40am, the crowd slowly dispersed.
Tajudin said they were detained after they tried to engage in provocative acts during a gathering outside the plaza.
He also gave his assurance that police will carry out an investigation that is transparent and fair to the parties concerned.
"The public is advised not to listen, believe or spread rumours on social media. Rely on the police for information," he added.
