Starting Nov 1, change of vehicle ownership can be done online as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has closed its 'Sikap' computer system and replaced it with 'mySikap' system.
JPJ director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad, however, before the new system could be used, both vehicle sellers and buyers must register at the JPJ counter for biometric verification purposes.
"This will prevent identity theft and ease the process to change the vehicle ownership.
"On average, 1.4 million users are using the service and this is indeed a very large and critical number," he told a press conference today.
He said with mySikap, users could change the vehicle ownership at any time as the department was planning to reduce its counter service from Jan 1, next year.
Other services available on the mySikap portal were payment of road tax and summonses, licence renewal and checking of blacklist status.
Ismail said the system was replaced in line with the government's call to see 85 per cent of government agencies' services to be offered online by 2015.
"Prior to this, we only offered 35 to 40 per cent of our services online, but we are increasing it from time to time," he added.
