The Kajang by-election is seen as a chance for voters to elect a MCA opposition representative in the Selangor state legislative assembly, said Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.
The MCA vice-president said that this would promote a two-party political system, which Pakatan Rakyat (PR) themselves claim as 'a healthier political culture'.
“This by-election is the one opportunity for Kajang voters to choose a MCA opposition state assemblyperson into the state legislative assembly of Selangor.
“…so that the Selangor Opposition, which is BN, will be able to consolidate our strength so we can listen to the voices of all levels of society in the state assembly,” said Chew in a press statement read out after being named the candidate by BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today.
Chew said she was aware that this by-election was a “major challenge” as she will face a self-proclaimed ‘world class leader’.
“We are aware that this by-election was deliberately created by PKR to resolve their own party’s infighting and for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be the Menteri Besar,” she said.
Chew appealed for the support of Kajang voters “so that I may be elected as the Kajang State Assemblyman to further strengthen the state’s opposition and our role as a check and balance against the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government”.
Chew vowed that she would be an elected representative who is easily accessible and contactable to the public, “one who truly assists the rakyat”.
“This is my promise to Kajang voters. If I am the choice of Kajang voters, I will shoulder and carry the responsibility myself, and not my secretary or assistants. I appeal to you to enable me the opportunity to work for all of you,” she said.
