Chris Ng's Combustion Chamber Ep. 04: Law Wins

Hello, dear readers, to a weekly column by yours truly about anything and everything under the sun. But only if the sun shines of things that have two to four wheels, involves motoring in general and the sometimes facepalm moments of being a motoring journalist. I’m not trying to be funny here, so I apologize in advance for causing any unintentional mirth. This is serious business of a business that’s serious.

So, at the risk of this becoming a rant column…

Purveyors of local dailies would have read in amusement (or horror for some) that Ops Warta is in full swing. The number of offenders arrested is now into the hundreds and those wise enough to surrender are in the thousands. Yet, tens of thousands of motorists are still at large. The method the offenders employ to avoid the law, which includes taking annual leave from the office, is laughable. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few have already fled the country.

Here’s the part that I don’t understand — why not just pay the summonses and get it over with? Why drag on till you’re hauled to the station or worse, charged in court. It stands to reason that if one does the crime, then one should do the time (or in this case, pay the dime). And there are plenty of ways to pay up without presenting yourself at the station. The Royal Malaysian Police have so graciously open kiosks in malls and hypermarkets just to save one the trouble of having to present oneself at the station. Or even better – and this is my favourite method because I get save precious time – is to get onto Myeg and pay up.

So, if you think you can fight the law, remember that the law will always win.
