Stern action will be taken against civil servants and former public servants who use their position to make statements or behave in a manner which can bring a bad perception of the government.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said Rule 19 of the Public Officers Regulation (Conduct and Discipline) 1993 bars them from making statements and comments without prior approval from the minister or department in charge.
"The rationale for this rule is to avoid misunderstanding caused by non legitimate sources and to avoid misinterpretation with regards to government decisions on those still in service."
Without referring to any case, Azalina said those who have retired are still bound by the Official Secrets Act 1972 (Act 88) which provides for offences relating to unauthorised disclosure of official secrets.
"The provisions of Act 88 were created for offences related to the disclosure of official secrets during retirement."
She added all civil servants must comply with the rule and the law to avoid misunderstanding among the public. - BERNAMA
