Civil servants involved in Anti-GST rally may face termination of service - Ali Hamsa

Civil servants found to be involved in the anti-Goods and Services Tax (GST) rally on Thursday will face stern action, including termination of service, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said.

He said civil servants were supposed to support all the government's aspirations and policies and not going against it.

"As usual, if we have solid evidence about their involvement, stern action will be taken against them as stated in the public service circular and disciplinary regulations, starting with warning to termination of service," he told reporters after presenting MARA Excellence Service Award 2013 to 864 recipients here Friday.

Also present was MARA director-general Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad.

Ali said this in response to the statement by Cuepacs president Azih Muda at the Civil Servants Workers Day celebration in Kedah yesterday, that government staff involved in the rally were traitors and did not deserve to be called civil servants.

Ali, however, said no reports were received regarding civil servants' involvement in the rally so far.

Earlier in his speech, Ali also reminded civil servants to always support and implement the national transformation policy to enable Malaysia to achieve the status of a fully-developed and high-income nation by 2020.

"The transformation will enable Malaysia to improve its competitiveness and generate a positive economic growth.

"This, inadvertently, create a possibility for the government to consider other incentives and benefits for civil servants in particular," he said.

Ali said the level of development in a country was not determined solely by its economic strength, but also by the level of transparency and integrity of its public sector.

Hence, he said he hoped those in the public sector would practice the concept of 'working is ibadah' that would motivate them to be more responsible at work.
