Clinic, pharmacy separation just rumours, says Dr Subramaniam

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam has advised the public not to listen to rumours relating to the government's proposal to separate the functions of the pharmacy and clinic.

He said his ministry was still discussing the matter and any speculation regarding the issue was not correct.

"The government has yet to make any decision. Certain quarters have suggested that the proposal be implemented but when the discussion is ongoing, many assumed that a decision has been made and the matter brought to Parliament.

"We are still using the same system." he told a media conference after officiating the ninth ASEAN Primer Health Care conference here today.

Prior to this, Malaysian Doctor's Club which accommodates over 8,000 doctors from private clinics and non governmental organisations in the medical field raised objections against the proposal to separate the function of the clinic and pharmacy by the government.

Meanwhile commenting on the government's measure to curb nicotine addiction involving students through an intervention programme, Dr Subramaniam said it would include at least 30 per cent of secondary schools nationwide by year's end.

"It is an ongoing effort by the Tobacco Control Unit. Our aim now is to ensure this programme is conducted in as many schools by the Primer Health care clinic," he added.
