[Columnist] Between Pride and Profits, Malaysia’s 5G Quagmire

However, as the facts gradually unravel, it becomes evident that our nation's ambitious 5G goals are being hindered by power struggles, and maybe, sheer greed.

The bold establishment of Digital Nasional Berhad's (DNB) pioneering 5G network represented more than just technological advancements—it symbolized our nation's pride, receiving the endorsement of our esteemed Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Sadly, it appears that this pride is now being traded away, sacrificed to satisfy the insatiable greed of corporations.

What explains the sudden and irrational obsession with the second network, Entity B? Why, as we stand on the verge of achieving a remarkable 90% 5G coverage, are we being dragged into a senseless and avoidable quagmire? This is more than just a disruptive occurrence; it is a flagrant sabotage of our national aspirations!

The thinly veiled argument of promoting "competition" through a second network is nothing short of laughable.

The true motives are glaringly obvious: the concentrated effort to target densely populated areas is not about serving the people's needs; it is a calculated maneuver to monopolise crucial spectrum bands and generate immense profits.

Adding to this already troubling scenario, the blind endorsement of Huawei raises legitimate security concerns that are being conveniently brushed aside.

Let us not even begin to delve into the economic catastrophe that could arise from this situation. Billions of Ringgits, our hard-earned money, will effectively be squandered if this second provider takes hold.

And let us not forget about DNB's mounting debt, which is a ticking time bomb waiting to implode, ultimately leaving the burden on the shoulders of the ordinary people to bear.

Former Bangi MP Dr Ong Kian Ming has dared to voice the concerns shared by many of us: the ominous possibility of a hostile takeover of DNB.

It is the "big boys" who seek to plunder DNB's assets, leaving a trail of financial devastation in their wake. The chilling truth is that if DNB faltered, it would not be the corporate giants who pay the price—it will be every ordinary Malaysian.

It is an insult to every Malaysian when we reflect on DNB's humble beginnings in March 2021. Its noble mission, now seemingly tainted, was to lead Malaysia into a 5G revolution. Enough is enough I say! It is high time that those manipulating the strings behind this 5G debacle remember their obligations to us, the Malaysian people.

We refuse to stand idly by, witnessing the disintegration of our digital dreams. This issue extends beyond 5G—it is about integrity, trust, and the very essence of our nation. We demand transparency, accountability, and, above all, justice!
