The commotion which occurred in the compound of the Parliament building yesterday had nothing to do with UMNO, said UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He said the party leadership also did not issue any instruction on an incident which involved Shah Alam Member of Parliament Khalid Abdul Samad.

"UMNO does not condone any action that leads to fight or brawl," he said in a statement here on Friday.

Nevertheless, Tengku Adnan said UMNO viewed seriously the use of offensive words and name-calling by parliamentary members to an extent that such action could draw the ire of other parliamentary members.

UMNO opposed such an act, which is regarded irrational and immature, as well as contradicts the ethics of an elected representative, he added.

In the incident, Khalid was reported to have been assaulted by a group of people.

Police have so far detained 11 people to assist investigation on the incident. - BERNAMA
