The Malaysian cooperative movement with a membership of 6.09 million members and 14,625 cooperatives is capable of making changes to the economic climate of the country, said Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
In a statement today, he said the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC) and agencies under the Malaysian Cooperative Commission and the Malaysian Cooperative Institute would coordinate actions to create awareness through the latest education and technology innovations.
"I hope that the cooperatives in this country can make it their mission to improve the economy of the country by adopting the best principles and practices of cooperation to achieve mutual prosperity," he said.
Wan Junaidi said the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the country's economy, especially the entrepreneurial community.
In line with the International Day of Cooperatives 2020 themed, "Cooperative for Climate Action", the cooperative movement in the country is urged to collectively respond to the challenge of developing the economy without neglecting the protection of the environment by increasing the use of green technology.
The first Saturday of July has been declared by the International Co-operative Alliance as the International Day of Cooperatives that is recognised by the United Nations.
