KUALA LUMPUR: A local man was arrested on suspicion of touching racial and religious sensitivities while performing at a comedy club here, as shown in two viral video clips.
It is understood that the suspect is the owner of a comedy club.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) secretary Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said in a statement tonight the 39-year-old man was detained to assist in the investigation.
She said the investigation was being carried out under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for issuing statements that tended to be seditious and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or network services.
"A remand order against the suspect will be made tomorrow to complete the investigation process and the investigation paper on the case will be referred to the Attorney General's office for further instructions," she said adding that the public should not make any speculation and statement that could disrupt the investigation.
Two video clips showing a man performing a stand-up comedy at a comedy club had recently gone viral on social media and received various reactions from netizens.
Yesterday, a woman was charged in court with causing disharmony among the Muslim community during her performance at a comedy club here while her boyfriend was charged with two counts of improper use of network facilities by making and initiating the transmission of offensive videos on social media.
