The alleged involvement of several officers from government agencies and government-linked companies (GLC) in recent corruption cases can tarnish the integrity of the civil service, according to Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa.
Citing the recent arrest of such officers by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Ali said it had also shaken public confidence in the sector.
"They (the public) are worried that the financial procurement system and procedures, which were formulated and set to ensure smooth public delivery, are no longer being adhered to by civil servants.
"In this context, I would like to stress that I don't believe that the majority of civil servants today are supporting the alleged misappropriation committed by those arrested by the relevant authorities."
He said this when opening the National Integrity Convention 2016 at the Malaysian Institute of Integrity here today.
Ali said he still believed that the majority of civil servants were still capable of discharging their duties with integrity and in an honest and trustworthy manner.
"Just because several officers acted above the law, it doesn't mean that all civil servants are doing it too," he said.
Recently, the MACC arrested two managing directors of GLC, each in Shah Alam and Seremban, on suspicion of abusing power and accepting bribe.
Meanwhile, at the event, Ali also launched a book on integrity module for enforcement agency. -- BERNAMA
