Abd Muin Hamzah, 56, and his wife, Nor Hanida Jaafar, 51, of Kampung Batu Menunggol, Pendang, had been excited about the opportunity they had got to trade for the first time at the Tanah Merah Ramadan Bazaar in Pendang.
They had left their home early today on a motorcycle for a chicken wholesaler outlet in Simpang Empat to buy the necessary products for their business.
However, what they had desired so badly was not to be. They were found dead in an irrigation canal into which their motorcycle had crashed after hitting a rock at the 8th Mile Jalan Alor Setar - Sungai Petani near Simpang Empat at 6.45am.
Nor Hanida's younger sister Rozhan, 41, said the couple left behind two daughters, aged 20 and 27.
"I was at home in Kampung Kobah when the call came on the accident," she said when met at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here. The call was made by Shahiran Ahmad, 33, who had rushed to the canal after learning of the accident.
Kota Setar Police chief ACP Adzaman Mohd Jan, when contacted, confirmed the accident.
