Court awards five former ISA detainees RM4.5 million in damages

Five former detainees of the Internal Security Act (ISA) received a compensation totalling RM4.5 million following their detention in 2011.
Two of them are Pakatan Rakyat representatives which are Batu MP, Tian Chua, Hulu Klang state assemblyman Saari Sungib, activist Hishamuddin Rais and former PKR leaders Badrul Amin Baharom and Badaruddin Ismail.
According to Malaysiakini, the Appeals Court today maintained the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision which awarded all five RM4.06 million in damages.
The Appeals Court however reduced the total damages from RM15,000 to RM10,000 for everyday they were illegally detained.
All five of them were also given RM30,000 in exemplary damages and the four of them except Badaruddin was given RM25,000 for defamation.
The decision was made by three judges lead by Appeals Court Judge Abdul Wahab Patail and Rohana Yusof and Umi Kalthum Abdul Majid.
