Court sets Feb date for 'Alvivi'
The Sessions Court on Wednesday set Feb 28 for mention of the case of controversial bloggers Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee, reported Bernama.
This followed the Court of Appeal's allowing of their appeal to postpone proceedings on three charges pertaining to insulting Muslims and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Judge Murtazadi Amran set the date after counsel Wong Kee Them told the court that the Court of Appeal had allowed on Jan 6 the appeal by his clients to postpone the Sessions Court proceedings scheduled for three days from today.
Alvin, 25, whose full name is Tan Jye Yee, and Vivian or Lee May Ling, 24, had appealed against a High Court decision of Nov 21 dismissing their appeal to postpone the proceedings pending the outcome of an appeal to strike out one of the three charges against them.
The duo are facing a charge pertaining to uploading a picture of them eating bak kut teh (a pork soup dish) with the caption, “Selamat Berbuka Puasa with bak kut teh”, which was likely to stir inter-faith conflict, at a restaurant in Dang Wangi on July 11 and 12 last year.
The controversial pair are also jointly charged under the Incitement Act 1948 with publishing inciting content, namely the same picture and caption, on their Facebook link at 568-14-18, Kompleks Mutiara Jalan Ipoh, Batu 3+, here.
The third charge, under the Film Censorship Act 2002, involves the posting of pornographic pictures between July 6 and 7 at the same place.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hafizza Jemali appeared for the prosecution.
