The use of face masks is only required for frontline personnel and those with respiratory infection symptoms such as cough and cold.
Federal Territories Minister, Tan Sri Annuar Musa said those who were not involved in the task of caring for COVID-19 patients or were healthy need not wear it even in public places.
"All advice indicates that the face masks should be worn by the frontline staff or have symptoms such as cough or cold.
"For those who are healthy, they are not required to wear them as they affect supply of such items, especially those in need of the masks," he said on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
Senior Minister of Infrastructure, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, said the government would try to get 10 million face masks from China following the shortage of supply in the local market.
