Culverts failed to accommodate water, causes flood in Bangsar

The spillover of water onto Jalan Bangsar on Monday was the result of the existing culverts not being able to accommodate the water during the heavy rain Monday afternoon.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), the backflow was caused by sediments from construction sites.

"I have ordered the DID to conduct a thorough investigation and submit the report to me as soon as possible," he told Bernama when met at his ministry's special Deepavali gathering here, yesterday.

Heavy rains hit several parts of the Klang Valley, causing flash floods along many major roads.

Postings on the social media said the affected roads were the Federal Highway near Bangsar South, the Middle Ring Road 2 near Bukit Jalil and the Lekas Highway at the Kantan Permai Kajang exit.

In a separate development, Wan Junaidi said the ministry was studying legislation to prevent wildlife from becoming victims of roadkill.

"I view these cases seriously. Usually, when these animals are hit by vehicles, the drivers get away because there are no laws to punish them.

"I have instructed the ministry's legal advisor to study the appropriate provisions so that the law can be amended immediately," he said.

In the latest case, a tapir was found dead after it was hit by a vehicle along Jalan Jeli- Dabong, near Kampung Renyuk, Jeli, on Sunday.
