Customs to receive tax returns next month: DG

The Royal Malaysian Customs (Customs) will receive its first Goods and Services Tax (GST) return statement from businesses with business value of RM5 million and above, next month, said its director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad.

He said the statements were expected to be received after May 20.

"May is an important month for customs. For businesses worth below RM5 million, they will submit their tax return every three months and this time it will be in July.

"The majority of tax returns received in May were via online. Customs still accepts the statement sent manually," he told reporters after a handover ceremony of 55 vehicles for GST audit officers at Customs headquarters here Monday.

The GST came into effect on April 1 at a rate of 6 percent to replace the sales and services tax (SST) of 16 percent.

On the 55 units of Proton Preve, Khazali said the new vehicles could improve their operational efficiency and ensure all businesses that had registered with GST would comply with the laws and regulations.

The vehicles were handed over to the states based on the number of businesses registered with the GST, he said.

Kuala Lumpur Customs received eight units; Selangor (six); Sabah, Sarawak, Penang and Johor (five); Perak (three); Kelantan, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan (two); and Perlis and Terengganu (one).

He said the remaining vehicles would be handed over later based on needs.
