Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will hold discussions with several parties to process leftover food into compost.
Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Phesal Talib said the initiative was the last resort to address food wastage which had reached critical level.
"I hope the food wastage problem can be addressed next year by processing leftover food into compost," he told reporters when handing over food for 'iftar' or buka puasa to over 30 DBKL traffic personnel here, Saturday.
He said the compost produced could be used by DBKL to enrich the soil and reduce expenses.
Bernama on Friday reported that Malaysians wasted some 270,000 tonnes of food during Ramadan.
The amount of wasted food can be served to 180 million people, almost six times the population of this country.
