DC Says: Lacking in exposure

1)Their background lack any such exposure, and therefore they have nothing to base as a benchmark for “good” driving, as opposed to “bad” driving. These are known as 1st Generation (1G).
Bad drivers on Malaysian roads. Let’s look at category one, the 1G.
There is really little that can be done here. Come on, be fair. They have just got up to a level where they can own a car. It’s a time for celebration. Yay!!! Welcome on board. But stop pissing other road users off.
Assuming they got their driving license through sheer hard work and integrity, someone screwed up in training them or the standard for passing has gone way down since my time.
I mean, how do we help people who have no idea what proper driving entails? Is this not where the minimum coaching hours and logic/common sense kicks in? And if not common sense… maybe survival skills?
First thing first, do they even know they are horrendous behind the wheel? Chances are… yes!!! Unless they have been in a perpetual state of good fortune to not meet any frustrated road users… and this is Kuala Lumpur, home of some of the most disgruntled drivers… in the world.
Without a doubt, they have been high-beamed, honked and given dagger stares. So trust me, they know. And I may look familiar to some of you. Sorry about that.
Can they improve? Yes, but it starts with understanding they currently suck, big time. At this point in time, can I implore relatives and close friends to help these poor souls. They are not bad people, just poor drivers.
But no, it’s not okay to discard signaling or without checking the side mirror when you turn. I have seen a poor biker ram into the side of one such driver. These are basic, best practice. How would you like to crash your bike, fly across the bonnet of a car of some inept and idiotic driver?
But here are my suggestions:
- Get a rule book. Know the law of the land. You will be driving, probably, the rest of your life. Why not make it a pleasant affair, both for you and other road users. And I will be honest, it’s mainly so I won’t burst a vein, every day, driving on the road, with you.
- Ask a close friend to sit with you on a typical drive. Get their feedback. If you don’t have anyone who can give you proper feedback… call me. I am not sure if you will survive the drive… but yeah… give me a call.
