Traders in Pahang have been cautioned against making the floods as an excuse for them to jack up the price of essential goods.
Pahang director of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (PPDNKK) A. Arwan Abdul Aziz said stern action will be taken against traders under the Sale of Goods Act.
"Under the Act, traders who raise the price of controlled items can be fined RM10,000 or jailed three years' while companies face fine up to RM100,000 and three years' jail or both," he told Bernama here today.
Arwan said 61 essential goods supply centres have been set up to meet the need of flood victims and retailers throughout Pahang.
"Supply of essential goods is more than adequate as authorised dealers are allowed to stock up during the Monsoon season.
"There is no reason for supply to run out unless the road is cut off. PPDNKK, suppliers and wholesalers have an alternative plan to send goods to flood victims in times of emergency."
He advised consumers not to buy food items in high quantity during the rainy spell as it would cause traders to jack up the price of essential goods.
