Don't spread false information on floods

The reminder from Chief of Armed Forces General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was aimed at ensuring the information did not affect the operation of the security forces involved.

Zulkifeli said the action of certain irresponsible individuals who spread the false news through the WhatsApp application and Facebook social site on the occurrence of floods would affect rescue operations.

As an example, he cited rumours spread through the social media that 10 people were believed to have drowned as a result of being trapped in a house in Guchil, Kuala Krai during the flood last year.

"Their action will make things worse and I ask the public not to believe news that are spread in the social media. They need to refer to the relevant authorities to verify news received," he said when contacted by Bernama here.

Meanwhile Khalid said during the flood season, false weather warnings were also frequently received through the social media and the public were advised to obtain authentic information from the relevant authorities before taking further action.

He said any irresponsible action would not only complicate the rescue operations but would also create panic among the community.

"These are not play things and are serious matters as they involve the lives of the people," he said.
