Dr Subramaniam: Rabies in Sarawak under control, no new cases reported

He said this was following the latest report received from the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department which conducted checks on dogs in Kuching and Serian divisions.

However, he said the government would only declare the country free from the outbreak after no humans and animals are reported positive for rabies infection within a period of two years.

"After two years then we can declare it as rabies free. As such the status of the disease will continue to be monitored," he said in a media conference after launching the 'Suku-Suku Separuh' campaign here today.

On June 23, the fifth rabies victim died at the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching and no new cases had been reported so far nationwide.

Meanwhile commenting on the 'Suku-Suku Separuh' campaign, Dr Subramaniam said the healthy nutrition programme is aimed at raising awareness among Malaysians on healthy eating habits to reduce the risk of nutrition-related illness.

He said the programme refers to the consumption of one quarter portion of carbohydrate sources such as rice or bread on a plate; one quarter portion of protein sources such as fish and meat and another half a portion of fruits and vegetables.

The campaign will be held throughout this month with the participation of various parties including government and private sectors.

"I really hope the community can understand this simple concept and practice it," he added.
