Drones need DCA approval to fly - Liow

Drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) need the approval of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) before they can fly.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this was to ensure that drones did not affect flying aircraft, adding that the DCA will register drone users.

"We are holding briefings and dialogues before issuing new safety rules," he told reporters after the launch of Sungai Rambai International Air Carnival 2015 by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron here Sunday.

Liow reminded private aircraft owners and drone enthusiasts to comply with the laws and regulations of DCA to ensure safety of airspace.

He said the runway of Melaka International Airport (MIA) would be extended by 400 metres to facilitate the landing of commercial aircraft.

However, the upgrading of the runway was still in discussion as it involves the acquisition of land from people in the area.

"This effort is expected to attract more commercial aircraft to land at MIA. I understand that five airlines are interested in flying here," he said.

The Transport Ministry had approved RM1.6 million to upgrade facilities at the Sungai Rambai Aerodrome, especially lighting, to allow night flights.
