EC notified of vacancy for Sg Limau seat

Kedah State Assembly Speaker Datuk Md Rozai Shafian Sunday handed over the notice of vacancy for the Sungai Limau state seat in Yan to the Election Commission following the death of its assemblyman Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak on Thursday.

The notice together with the death certificate of the former Kedah Menteri Besar was handed to Kedah EC director Juhari Abdul Rahman at the Speaker's office in Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar.

Azizan, who held the menteri besar post for one term when the opposition won Kedah in the 2008 general election, died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital due to diabetes complications.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Md Rozai said he gave the late Azizan's family time to get the death certificate as he did not want to rush them in this time of sorrow.

Following the delivery of the notice, the EC has to call a by-election for the seat within 60 days.

Azizan had been the assemblyman for Sungai Limau since 1995.

In PUTRAJAYA, EC public relations officer Sabri Said in a statement said the commission would meet on Thursday (Oct 3) to decide the nomination and polling dates for the by-election.
