Employers told to register foreign workers
Employers who have yet to register their foreign workers under the 6P amnesty programme are advised to do so following cases of some of them being cheated by employment agents. Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there were employers who had paid between RM3,000 and RM5,000 to employment agents to do so, only to find out later that the agents did not do that. "They made the payment to foreign workers' agents, but were not given any documents," he told a press conference at a programme involving the ministry's staff with the author of the book, "La Tahzan", here, on Friday. He said the advice was given to be fair to employers. Since last Sunday, the Immigration Department, together with other relevant agencies launched a massive nationwide operation against illegal immigrants, targeting construction sites and commercial areas. Ahmad Zahid said so far, more than 5,000 illegal immigrants had been arrested in the integrated operation under the 6P programme, "which will continue until we get zero arrest". In another development, he said there were various plans to improve the wellbeing of members of the Royal Malaysian Police, including setting up a Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) for children of policemen. "We will also find an alternative to increase the dividend from four per cent in the police cooperative." Ahmad Zahid said he had been to several police stations, as well as the state and district police headquarters, and found that there were a lot to be upgraded, besides the staff quarters.
