Error in work procedure caused 'beam incident' at LRT construction site

An error in the procedure for lifting steel beams by the contractor caused the beams to fall and crush a vehicle at the LRT construction site in Subang last Thursday.

Deputy director-general (Operations) of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Mohtar Musri said following findings of initial investigation, his department issued a stop work order on the contractor concerned.

"We have issued a stop work order on all construction packages under the company,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

However, the investigations would be continued to determine if there were elements of negligence.

In the incident, a couple were almost killed when several steel beams at the LRT construction site in Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang crushed their car.

Mohtar said the contractor would be brought to court if the detailed investigation showed there was negligence.

"After the investigations are completed, we will send the investigation papers to the Attorney General's Chambers for further action."
