Ex-UMANY president claims trial to disobeying police order

PETALING JAYA:Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY) former president was charged in the Magistrate's Court today with disobeying the order given by a police officer during a raid at a house on Saturday.

Wong Yan Ke, 24, claimed trial after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Nurshahirah Abdul Salim.

The Civil Engineering graduate is alleged to have disobeyed the order given by ASP Lee Robert to stop a live video recording during a raid on Nov 7.

The charge, under Section 188 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to a month or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Atifah Hazimah Wahab asked the court to set bail at RM7,000 for the accused.

Counsel Rajsurian Pillai, representing Wong, asked the court to impose a bond without security, as penalties under Section 188 of the Penal Code were considerably low.

“He works for Klang MP Charles Santiago and earns RM2,600 a month. He also gave his full cooperation to the police,” he said.

Nurshahirah allowed bail of RM1,000 in one surety and set Feb 4 for mention.

It was reported that the raid was conducted regarding an investigation of a case under the Sedition Act 1948 involving UMANY.
