The public should not wait for the action of the authorities to start complying with the standard operating procedure (SOP) to control the spread of COVID-19.
Chairman of the Alliance For Safe Community, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the public should be aware that the threat of the pandemic still exists and should together bear the responsibility to curb it.
"Imposing fines on those who violate the SOP and do not wear face masks in public places is a step that needs to be implemented. I just wonder why it is necessary to reach that level (authorities to take action).
"SOP compliance should be done with self-awareness, there should be no coercion or pressure from outsiders. This is the responsibility of all of us," Lee said when appearing in the AWANI Bulletin on Sunday.
He added that the flexibility given by the government with the implementation of the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) should not be taken lightly.
"The number of infections has recently increased to double digits, there needs to be discipline and a high level of responsibility among the community.
"I also suggest that the government issue a general definition to distinguish between public places and crowded public places.
"This way it will be easier for the public to understand and for the authorities to carry out enforcement," he said.
Starting August 1, those who do not wear face masks in public will be fined RM1,000.
Most recently, Malaysia recorded 13 new COVID-19 cases with one death on Sunday.
