VIENTIANE (LAOS): Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, will lead Malaysia's delegation to the 42nd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and its associated meeting in Vientiane, Laos, from Sept 26 to 27.
In a statement today, the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) said the meeting, chaired by Laos, will be attended by ASEAN Energy Ministers.
PETRA noted that discussions will centre on policy direction, infrastructure development, programme implementation, and the sharing of information, technology, and expertise in the energy sector among ASEAN member countries.
The statement underlined that Fadillah's attendance reaffirms Malaysia's commitment to advancing ASEAN's agenda, particularly in preparation for the country's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.
"As Deputy Chairman of the 42nd AMEM Meeting, Fadillah will outline Malaysia's stance on various energy issues," PETRA said.
A key focus will be the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, a cornerstone of Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship, aimed at driving energy transition both domestically and regionally.
Fadillah will also advocate for inclusive and equitable energy development, highlighting Malaysia's ambition for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
This includes the National Energy Transition Roadmap, the Hydrogen Economy Roadmap and the New Industrial Master Plan.
PETRA emphasised that AMEM provides a strategic platform to bring together stakeholders in ASEAN's energy industry, alongside dialogue partners and international energy organisations, to discuss the holistic development of the region's energy sector.
"Malaysia's progressive initiatives can position the country as a green investment hub, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and attracting investors from Southeast Asia," PETRA added.
Fadillah is also scheduled to hold bilateral and multilateral discussions with ASEAN Energy Ministers, dialogue partners, and leaders of international energy organisations.
"The Deputy Prime Minister will leverage this opportunity to promote Malaysia as an investment destination and to clarify policies on energy development and low-carbon technology, both key elements of the nation's energy transition strategy," the statement concluded.
