The Customs Department will work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take action against the spread of defamatory and false news about the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Customs director-general Datuk Seri Subromaniam Tholasy said the move was to curb the slander hurled by certain parties against the GST recently.

"I feel sad when I sometimes receive Whatsapp messages from friends, I read it and know the news is not right.

"The younger generation on the other hand is gullible. So, it is important that someone investigates the matter, and I feel they (the irresponsible parties) should not think that everyone is stupid," he told the media here today.

He earlier officiated the Kota Tinggi GST Office to facilitate the more than 4,000 companies registered under the tax system.

In his opening speech, Subromaniam called on politicians not to use the GST as an election campaign issue.
