Families of three children drowned in bauxite pool to sue land owner

Families of three children who drowned in a pool at a disused bauxite mining site in Taman Sungai Karang Jaya near here last month, will file a lawsuit against the land owner.
The suit will be filed by lawyer Mohd Harris Abdullah who represented the parents of the three drowned children, namely Nureen Ain Juwita Mohd Sharif, 10, Salsabila Zuhairi, 12, and Salsabila's brother, Mahathir Mohamad, 7.
Mohd Harris told a press conference Tuesday he had already received confirmation from the Land and Mines Office (PTG) on information related to the land owner after being appointed to represent the victims' families.
However, he said he was still waiting for a copy of full investigation report and images related to the case from the police.
"PTG has also confirmed that there was no permit or mining lease or licence ever issued to the land owner.
"I have already received feedback from the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital to obtain copy of medical reports (post mortem) on the death of the three children," he said.
Asked about the amount of damages to be claimed by the victims' families, Mohd Harris said the general damages, exemplary damages and other claims will be decided by the court.
In the 5 pm incident on Feb 4, Nureen Ain Juwita, Salsabila and Mahathir Mohamad were found drowned while playing in the vicinity of the disused bauxite mining pool. -- Bernama
