The family of a nine-year-old boy whose penis was severed during a circumcision gone awry, hopes to get help from specialists to reattach the part.
Lawyer P.Uthayakumar, who is representing the parents, Ali Akhbar Pakkeer Mohamad and Rodziah Abdul Razak, said the family wants immediate action since it is a sensitive issue and involves the boy's future.
"A private health centre has referred the case to HKL (Hospital Kuala Lumpur) since they do not have specialists to reattach the severed part.
"If HKL does not have specialists to help his son, I urge HKL, Pusat Zakat or Baitulmal to get specialists from abroad like Singapore to reattach the part," he told reporters at HKL, here Friday.
Uthayakumar said the situation is further complicated when the severed part of the penis has already turned black.
The boy's father, Ali Akhbar said his trouble began on Dec 15 when he took his son for circumcision at a clinic in Jalan Ipoh.
The doctor who did the circumcision had accidentally severed the head of the penis and admitted negligence.
He said the doctor tried to reattach the severed part but failed. The clinic then referred the case to a private medical centre which referred it to HKL.
HKL has not responded despite the case happening more than two weeks ago.
Ali Akhbar has sent a formal letter to Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and HKL director Datuk Dr Zainiah Mohd Zain for a response.
The letter was sent through his lawyer on Thursday. --Bernama
