Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said a tip-off was received from the public at 12.54 pm that there was a suspicious man wielding a knife at the apartment.
"Police officers arrived at the scene and found three individuals, all locals, lying on the floor in front of the apartment's lift lobby, covered in blood.
"The victims, a 62-year-old man, and his 30-year-old daughter, were confirmed dead from severe stab wounds," he said in a statement today.
He added that the male suspect, aged 32, who had slashed and stabbed himself, had been detained and sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment. The knife used to stab the victims was also seized.
He stated that police are currently investigating the motive for the murders and urged witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation of the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He also advised the public to refrain from speculating about the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, as it could interfere with investigations.
A female family member, who preferred not to be named, claimed that the female victim was not in a relationship with the suspect and that she was married with three children.
"Please give our family some space... we have lost two loved ones at once," she said.
