Festivals not the same without firecrackers, says public
The tradition of setting off firecrackers is synonymous with the Chinese New Year celebration. In terms of tradition, the sound of firecrackers would help ward off ghosts and evil spirits.
The bursting of fireworks is also found during other festivities in Malaysia. However, there are many reports of injuries among children every year. The police and custom official are also on the lookout for firecrackers sold illegally.
According to a recent poll conducted by AstroAwani.com, 54.9 percent of voters said that should the bursting of fireworks be banned, it will affect the tradition and joyous mood of any festival celebrated.
Around 39.22 percent disagreed.
Those who are unsure stand at 3.92 percent (who answered 'Maybe Yes') and 1.96 percent answered 'Maybe No'.
