Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the first phase of the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah will be launched in the first quarter of next year.

He said the construction of the 2,239km-long highway that would eventually link the major cities of Sabah and Sarawak was also an effort to fulfill the federal government’s high commitment towards infrastructural and economic development in Sabah.

"Just last week the Economic Council approved the new order structure of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah," he said when addressing the National Integration Seminar jointly organised by the Department of National Unity and Integration and Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) here today.

Najib said the project, when completed, would boost ties between Sabah, Sarawak and certain provinces in neighbouring Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia.

The Pan Borneo Highway is one of the projects promised by Barisan Nasional in its manifesto for the 2013 general election.
