Five food factories in Penang, including a 100-year-old soya bean factory in Tanjong Bungah, were ordered closed by the state health department yesterday for failure to observe hygienic conditions.
State health (food safety and quality division) deputy director, Ku Nafishah Ku Ariffin said soya bean products were made in a rusty and moldy kitchen which appeared to have not been cleaned up for a long time.
"Our inspection also found the wet products were left to dry on bamboo sticks with bathing towels. The bamboo sticks were also dirty and dusty," she told reporters here yesterday.
The other premises closed included a candy factory in Teluk Kumbar, a noodle factory in Simpang Ampat and a sauce factory in Bukit Mertajam.
