The new Proton compact car (PCC) on Wednesday received five-star rating in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and four-star rating in Child Occupant Protection (COP) by the New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (Asean NCAP).
Asean NCAP chairman, Prof Dr Wong Shaw Voon in a statement said the PCC was the second car (after Perodua Axia) to obtain its safety rating before the market debut, with the car scheduled to be officially launched on Thursday.
"I congratulate Proton for this achievement and hopefully this will set a trend among all manufacturers to produce a global platform of five-star cars in the region," he said.
Wong said safety had now brought the passenger car market to another level where the price remained competitive.
"This is a good sign for us and most importantly to the consumers, as they will know the result of our rating even before the launch, hence the decision- making is much easier."
He said as the final pricing would only be made public after the official launch, Asean NCAP could only suggest that this car had the best prospect to be the most affordable five-star AOP car in the Asean region.
