GEORGE TOWN: Part of the Jalan Paya Terubong (Bukit Kukus) paired road was flooded yesterday following heavy rains as the water flow was blocked by rubbish and dried leaves.
The Penang City Council (MBPP) in a statement today said it had carried out immediate cleaning work and the affected section was now safe for road users.
"Based on MBPP inspection of the area, we concluded that the flash flood was due to heavy rain in the area and dried leaves as well as rubbish had prevented proper flow of water into the drainage system," the statement read.
MBPP also called on the public to work together with the council in maintaining cleanliness and to stop throwing rubbish indiscriminately to prevent a recurrence.
Stagnant water had accumulated at the end of Jalan Paya Terubong Paired Road (Bukit Kukus), touted as the highest elevated highway in Malaysia, following heavy rains yesterday afternoon.
A 10-second video showing the pool of water which went viral on social media received much criticism with some expressing disappointment over the poor drainage system along the newly launched road.
